Exosomes are small vesicles that are released from cells within the body. These vesicles can provide a means of cell to cell communication. They can also allow for transportation of cargo between cells. In some instances, the vesicles can even deliver medications to the body. They can transfer types of RNA into cells, which can mediate biological functions through gene regulation. Stem cell derived exosomes can transfer RNA to a recipient cell, which transfers genetic information to these target cells. These exosomes can be as effective as stem cells, and have shown promising results in the treatment of cardiac injury, kidney injury, liver injury, lung injury and wound healing.
